Care & Maintenance
Proper care extends the life of your storage box.
- Regular Cleaning: Wipe exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Use mild soapy water for stubborn dirt. Rinse with clean water and dry immediately with a soft cloth.
- Interior: Vacuum or wipe out dust and debris periodically.
- Wood Care (Annual): To maintain the finish and weather resistance, apply a thin coat of IKEA recommended outdoor wood oil or a suitable exterior-grade teak oil once a year. Test on a small, inconspicuous area first.
- Ventilation: Keep ventilation grilles clear of leaves, spider webs, and dirt to allow air circulation.
- Hinges & Hardware: Check screws and hinges annually. Tighten if loose. If rust appears on metal parts, clean with a rust remover and apply a touch-up paint suitable for metal.
DO NOT: Use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, pressure washers, bleach, or harsh chemicals. Do not sand the wood aggressively.
Seasonal Storage
For harsh winter climates or long periods of non-use.
- Empty & Clean: Completely empty the box. Clean the interior and exterior as described above. Ensure it is completely dry.
- Indoor Storage: If possible, move the box to a dry, covered location like a garage or shed.
- Outdoor Storage: If left outside, cover it with a breathable, waterproof furniture cover. Do not use plastic tarps that trap moisture.
- Lid: Leave the lid slightly ajar (use a small block of wood) to promote air circulation and prevent musty odors.
- Re-seasoning: Before the next season of use, apply a fresh coat of protective oil if needed.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
| Lid is difficult to open/close | Hinges misaligned or screws loose; wood swollen from moisture. | Check and tighten hinge screws. If wood is swollen, allow to dry completely in a shaded area. Lightly sand hinge contact points if necessary. |
| Lock is stiff or key won't turn | Dirt/debris in lock; lack of lubrication; misaligned strike plate. | Blow out debris. Apply graphite powder. Loosen strike plate screws, align with latch, and retighten. |
| Box wobbles on surface | Uneven ground; leg not touching surface. | Move box to a level surface. Insert thin, weather-resistant shims under the base where needed. |
| Musty smell inside | Poor ventilation; stored damp items. | Clean interior and let air dry fully with lid open. Ensure vent grilles are clear. Store only dry items. |
| Wood finish looks faded or grey | Normal weathering from sun and rain. | Clean the wood. Lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper along the wood grain. Apply a fresh coat of exterior wood oil or stain. |
| Squeaking hinges | Metal-on-metal friction. | Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to hinge pins. Wipe away excess. |
| Water pooling inside | Lid not sealing perfectly; box is not level (lid tilted). | Ensure box is level so lid drains away from the box. Check seal; it is designed to shed water but is not airtight. |
