  2. Assembly Surface: Assemble on a soft, clean surface (e.g., carpet or grass) to avoid scratching the wood.
  3. Children: Do not allow children to play inside the box. The lid can close unexpectedly.
  4. Lock: Keep the key in a safe place, away from children. Do not lock the box with people or pets inside.
  5. Weight Capacity: Do not exceed the maximum load of 55 lbs (25 kg) distributed evenly.
  6. Placement: Ensure the box is placed on a flat, stable, and level surface to prevent tipping.

Assembly Instructions

Estimated assembly time: 45-60 minutes. Follow steps in order.

  1. Prepare Parts: Lay out all parts and hardware. Identify each piece using the included diagram.
  2. Attach Sides to Base:
    • Place the base panel flat on your protected assembly surface.
    • Position one long side panel against the long edge of the base. Align the pre-drilled holes.
    • Insert and tighten the provided screws using the hex key. Do not overtighten.
    • Repeat for the opposite long side panel.
    • Attach the two short side panels to the base in the same manner.
  3. Install Ventilation Grilles:
    • Locate the cut-out sections on the two short side panels.
    • From the inside, press each plastic ventilation grille into its cut-out until it snaps securely into place.
  4. Attach the Lid:
    • With the help of a second person, carefully lift the lid panel and align its pre-attached hinges with the hinge plates on the rear long side panel.
    • Insert the hinge pins and secure them according to the diagram. Ensure the lid opens and closes smoothly.
  5. Install the Lockable Latch:
    • Position the latch assembly on the front center of the lid. Mark screw holes with a pencil.
    • Pre-drill small pilot holes to prevent wood splitting.
    • Screw the latch to the lid. Attach the strike plate to the front of the box body, aligning it with the latch.
    • Test the lock with the provided key. The lid should lock securely and the key should turn smoothly.
  6. Final Check: Tighten all screws. Open and close the lid several times to ensure proper operation.

Specifications

Placement & Use

For optimal longevity and performance.

  1. Location: Place on a flat, stable surface such as a patio, deck, or balcony. Avoid direct ground contact on soil or grass; use a paved surface or decking.
  2. Leveling: Use shims under the base if the surface is slightly uneven to prevent stress on the hinges.
  3. Clearance: Ensure there is enough space in front of the box for the lid to open fully without obstruction.
  4. Loading: Distribute weight evenly. Place heavier items at the bottom. Do not exceed the maximum load.
  5. Recommended Items: Garden cushions, outdoor tableware, gardening gloves, small tools, pool toys, barbecue accessories.
  6. Not Recommended: Food (attracts pests), flammable liquids, valuables requiring high security, electronics, or items sensitive to humidity.

Locking Mechanism

The lock provides basic security and keeps the lid closed in windy conditions.

  1. Operation: Insert the key, turn clockwise to lock, counter-clockwise to unlock.
  2. Key Safety: Two keys are provided. Store one in a secure indoor location as a spare.
  3. Lubrication: If the lock becomes stiff, apply a small amount of graphite powder (not oil) into the keyhole.
  4. Lost Key: Contact IKEA customer service with your article number and proof of purchase for replacement lock/latch options.

Note: This lock is for deterrence only and is not a high-security device.

Care & Maintenance

Proper care extends the life of your storage box.

  1. Regular Cleaning: Wipe exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Use mild soapy water for stubborn dirt. Rinse with clean water and dry immediately with a soft cloth.
  2. Interior: Vacuum or wipe out dust and debris periodically.
  3. Wood Care (Annual): To maintain the finish and weather resistance, apply a thin coat of IKEA recommended outdoor wood oil or a suitable exterior-grade teak oil once a year. Test on a small, inconspicuous area first.
  4. Ventilation: Keep ventilation grilles clear of leaves, spider webs, and dirt to allow air circulation.
  5. Hinges & Hardware: Check screws and hinges annually. Tighten if loose. If rust appears on metal parts, clean with a rust remover and apply a touch-up paint suitable for metal.

DO NOT: Use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, pressure washers, bleach, or harsh chemicals. Do not sand the wood aggressively.

Seasonal Storage

For harsh winter climates or long periods of non-use.

  1. Empty & Clean: Completely empty the box. Clean the interior and exterior as described above. Ensure it is completely dry.
  2. Indoor Storage: If possible, move the box to a dry, covered location like a garage or shed.
  3. Outdoor Storage: If left outside, cover it with a breathable, waterproof furniture cover. Do not use plastic tarps that trap moisture.
  4. Lid: Leave the lid slightly ajar (use a small block of wood) to promote air circulation and prevent musty odors.
  5. Re-seasoning: Before the next season of use, apply a fresh coat of protective oil if needed.
