- Lifting: The assembled unit is heavy; use two people for lifting and positioning.
- Wall Attachment: To prevent tipping, especially if children are present, securely attach the shelf to the wall using the provided hardware.
- Load Distribution: Place heavier items on lower shelves. Do not exceed the maximum weight capacity.
- Inspect: Check all screws are tight after assembly and periodically thereafter.
WARNING! Serious or fatal crushing injuries can occur from furniture tipping over. Always secure this furniture to the wall.
Assembly Steps
Follow the numerical order shown in the included pictogram guide. Estimated assembly time: 30-45 minutes.
- Prepare Parts: Lay out all parts and hardware. Identify left (A) and right (B) side frames.
- Attach Back Panel: Align the back panel (D) with the slots on the inside of both side frames. Gently tap into place until it sits flush.
- Connect Side Frames: Insert the top and bottom connector bars (E) between the two side frames at the pre-drilled holes at the front of the unit.
- Secure Frame: Using the provided screws (F), attach the side frames to the connector bars. Hand-tighten all screws initially, then fully tighten with a screwdriver.
- Install Shelves: Position the shelves (C) on the desired shelf support pins (integrated into side frames). Ensure the shelf rests evenly on all four support points.
- Final Check: Ensure the unit is square and all screws are fully tightened. Do not overtighten.
Tip: Assemble the unit close to its final location to avoid moving the heavy, assembled product.
Adjusting Shelf Height
The HYLLIS shelf features adjustable shelf positions for custom storage.
- Remove all items from the shelf you wish to adjust.
- Lift the shelf straight up and out of the side frame supports.
- Align the shelf with the desired set of support pins on the side frames.
- Lower the shelf onto the pins, ensuring it is level and securely seated.
CAUTION! Never adjust shelves while the unit is loaded. Empty the shelf first to prevent injury or damage.
Weight Capacity & Placement
- Max Load per Shelf: 33 lbs (15 kg).
- Total Unit Capacity: 132 lbs (60 kg) distributed across all four shelves.
- Recommended Use: Indoor use only. Avoid placement in areas with high humidity (e.g., bathrooms without ventilation) to prevent potential rust, despite the protective coating.
- Surface: Place on a flat, level floor. If placed on carpet, ensure the unit does not rock.
- Wall Attachment: Use the included wall restraint device. Locate wall studs for the most secure attachment.
Care & Maintenance
Proper care will maintain the appearance and longevity of your shelf.
- Cleaning: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Use a mild detergent if needed. Dry immediately with a clean cloth.
- Avoid: Abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the powder coating.
- Inspection: Periodically check the tightness of all screws and the security of the wall attachment.
CAUTION! Do not use wax, polish, or silicone-based products on the steel surface.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
| Unit wobbles or is unstable | Floor not level; screws loose; not attached to wall | Tighten all frame screws. Attach to wall using kit. Place a shim under the low side if floor is uneven. |
| Shelf will not sit level | Shelf not properly seated on all four pins; pins damaged | Remove shelf and reseat, ensuring all corners click into place. Inspect pins for bending. |
| Screws are hard to turn or strip | Cross-threaded; using wrong tool | Do not force. Back screw out and restart threading by hand. Use correct Phillips #2 screwdriver. |
| Back panel difficult to install | Side frames may be slightly misaligned | Loosen connector bar screws slightly to align frames, tap panel in, then retighten screws. |
| Rust spots appear | Coating scratched; exposed to constant moisture | Light surface rust can be removed with a soft cloth. Keep unit in a dry environment. Touch up with matching paint if needed. |
